On October 29, Colonel Bobby C. Woods, Jr., Director of the HQ Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) sent a letter notifying Essex High School that its AFJROTC program will be deactivated effective June 30, 2015. The decision to cancel the Essex AFJROTC program springs from continued lack of Essex AFJROTC minimum student enrollment requirements and decreased funding to the United States Air Force, which financially supports JROTC units worldwide.
