Jade Hazard Math Specialist
As a teacher, I am a partner in learning with my students, and when I plan the curriculum I take into consideration their needs and try to plan activities that are both engaging and challenging.
FIRST GRADE MATH
Establishing Routines
In this unit, an active learning environment is established in which children will build mathematical knowledge in cooperation with myself and their classmates. Routines are introduced that will be followed both throughout the school year and in later grades. These routines provide a structure within which the children will begin to work on a number of rich mathematical activities.
The four main areas of focus:
-
To practice counting on a numberline
-
To practice comparing pairs of numbers
-
To practice daily routines for marking on slates and making and recording weather observations
-
To learn how to represent data using tally counts
THIRD GRADE MATH
Routines, Review , and Assessment
The organization of Everyday Mathematics is based on the observation that children learn best when they build on prior knowledge. Unit 1 has a number of review activities for mathematics that children have encountered in earlier grades. Unit 1 also establishes routines meant to be used all year to promote an active and cooperative learning environment.
The four main areas of focus:
-
Explore patterns on number grids
-
To review telling time, measuring lengths, and using calculators
-
To review data concepts and make predictions based on data
-
To give equivalent names for numbers
