POSITION OBJECTIVES:
To provide effective induction, orientation, support, assistance and guidance to assigned intern to promote their professional growth and success, to improve teaching quality, and to prepare the intern for educator licensure.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.INDUCTION/ORIENTATION
- Integrates the intern into the social system of the school, the school district, and the community.
- Familiarizes/orients the intern with district and building operating policies and procedures.
- Orients the intern to instructional and other services/resources available through district funds, programs, and personnel.
- Familiarizes the intern with the Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities.
SUPPORT
- Works collaboratively with the intern on a daily basis, answering questions, preparing lesson plans, providing information about curricular and school-wide issues, and supporting the intern.
- Provides continued assistance to the intern in handling the problems and tasks of teaching to reduce identified problems.
- Works side-by-side with the intern and provides constant supervision over the intern throughout the course of the day up until the "solo" teaching period.
- During the "solo" teaching period, performs a minimum of three classroom observations to identify needs of the intern; provides notes and write-ups to the intern, and effective intervention when appropriate.
- Provides on-going support to the intern in the development of knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in their teaching career.
- Provides needed advice and support with regard to student management and classroom environment; assists the intern in establishing an effective discipline in the classroom.
- Provides advice and guidance to the intern in establishing good working relationship with parents and school faculty and staff.
- Provides needed support on instructional information (lesson plans and curriculum) to ensure the intern effectively delivers grade level appropriate content.
- Observes the intern regularly and provides written feedback and conference time based on observation evidence.
- Maintains simple logs and notes of observations.
OTHER PROFESSIONAL DUTIES
- Participates in at least two mentor-intern meetings facilitated by the Mentor Coordinator/Professional Development Director to focus on specific issues such as student placement, parental contact, classroom management, school-wide procedures, special education regulations, and other issues common to new teachers.
- Participates in at least two mentor-only training programs offered outside of school hours.
- Communicates concerns to the Mentor Coordinator/Professional Development Director so that the program curriculum can be adjusted accordingly.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, in addition to the following:- Demonstrated proficiency as an educator in content area, teaching techniques, and leadership.
- Ability to make the time commitments necessary for successful mentoring both during and outside the normal school hours.
- Highly committed to the task of helping pre-service teacher find success and gratification in the teaching career.
- Evidence of success as a cooperating teacher, or other mentoring capacity.
- Proven professional commitment to the school and district including recent and significant involvement in student activities, school/district projects, events, committees and the like.
- Willingness to observe and be observed.
- Demonstrated excellence in working with adults.
- Proven commitment to on-going professional development.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to others’ view-point.
- Demonstrated willingness to be an active and open listener.
- Demonstrated competence in social and public relation skills.
- Must hold a valid Vermont teaching license with an endorsement in the content and grade area the intern is seeking, and be actively teaching under this endorsement.
- Must work within the same school/department/team in which the intern is placed.
- Masters degree (or equivalent) plus five years of teaching experience preferred, but not required.
SDI Option
You may elect to participate for up to 3 UVM graduate credits for this work.
Compensation
$1000 stipend for one semester
TopExpectations
The CCSU mentoring program includes teachers new to the district, new teachers, TAP teaching candidates, and undergraduate student teachers. The program will be differentiated accordingly.
Curriculum
The curriculum for these meetings focuses on school policies and procedures, Special Education regulations, Danielson’s Framework for Teaching, Classroom Management, Assessment Techniques, 4-MAT lesson planning.
Observations
3 observations of your mentee (including pre-observation conference, observation and post-observation conference)
Regular mentor-mentee check-in
Please set aside 1 hour bi-weekly to check in with each other, in addition to being available for daily planning and consultations.
To Start
- During the first 2-3 weeks please have your mentee observe and make small contributions (10-30 min.) to each of your classes. Such tasks as attendance, homework review, small group work and individual help are suggested. Each week more planning and teaching are expected from your mentee.
- Please assist your intern in gaining computer access, parking permit and other technicalities of your setting.
- When you have a prep time/free time together, please explain the course content for the period during which your mentee will be with you.
- Please expect your mentee to participate fully in department meetings, IEP meetings and faculty meetings during their time at your school.
- Please help to arrange observations of teachers in your department and school. Your intern will be expected to do at least 2 outside observations per week as part of the TAP program. These observations will have a guided focus. There will be no observations during the solo teaching time.
