Chittenden Central Supervisory Union (CCSU) offers Publicly Funded Prekindergarten Education (Act 166) in private preschools  for children between the ages of 3 and 5 who reside in the towns of Essex Junction and Westford. We offer school-based preschools at Summit, Hiawatha and Westford serving children who turn 4 before September 1 of the identified school year.

What is publicly funded prekindergarten education through private preschools?

  • Ten hours per week (for 35 weeks) of developmentally appropriate early learning experiences that are based on Vermont’s Early Learning Standards.
  • Children who reside in Essex Junction or Westford and are between the ages of three and five are eligible. Prekindergarten education is limited to the academic school year (September 2016-June 2017)

What Should CCSU Families Know About Universal/Publicly Funded Prekindergarten?

  • Children must be at least 3 years old by Sept. 1 2016 to qualify for prekindergarten funding.
  • Publicly-funded prekindergarten services can be found in schools and qualified community-based programs (homes and centers). This link will bring you to a list of qualified pre-k providers in VT. http://education.vermont.gov/act-166 (scroll down the page to List of Pre-qualified Providers)
  • The state tuition rate paid to community-based private pre-k providers on behalf of children attending prekindergarten during the 2016-17 school year is $3092.
  • Children may not access the 10 hours of funding in both a school-based preschool slot and a private program.

How do I apply for Act 166 slots OR a school based preschool slot?

The EJSD School Based Preschool Program (located at Hiawatha and Summit), the school-based preschool program at Westford School and Act 166 Slots through private preschool partners are available through CCSU. The EJSD and Westford School Based Preschool program are free to residents as are the 10 hours of preschool through the Act 166 slots.  Both programming options provide 10 hours of preschool. In order to attend one of the school-based preschool programs in Essex Junction at Summit or Hiawatha, children must be 4 before September 1, 2016. In order to attend the Westford program at the Westford Elementary School, children must be 3 before September 1, 2016

To get an Act 166 slot at a private preschool, contact the preschool of interest to investigate availability at the program of your choice and then complete the school district registration form.   The school district provides the financial support for those slots but does not manage enrollment at private preschools, parents are responsible for securing space at the preschool.    Children must be 3 before September 1, 2016 to be eligible for Act 166 preschool slots in Essex Junction and Westford.

In order to access publicly funded prekindergarten, parents must request the funding for a private preschool program or request a school based slot through the school district. You may do so using the following request forms. Enrollment packets for the school district will be sent out to eligible families after May 1. Prekindergarten education is an entitlement for all 3, 4 and 5 year old children starting on July 1, 2015, so families may apply for funding at any time. Enrollment completed after the beginning of the school year may be pro-rated to reflect the number of week the child is enrolled.
