Bookshare at Home

Bookshare.org – a site to download digital text of books

Bookshare.org is a free website for students with a “reading disability”.   Special educators at CCSU can certify that students have a reading disability, with parents’ permission, and teachers can begin downloading books from the collection of over 100,000 digital texts at no charge for the student.  Please visit Bookshare.org to learn more about this exceptional resource.

Students do not need to have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan to be eligible for a free membership to bookshare, they just need to have a difficulty learning to read.  If a child does not have a reading disability, a membership to bookshare may be purchased for an annual fee.

If you think your child may be eligible for free downloads from bookshare.org, please discuss this with your child’s teacher or special educator so that your child may access this incredible resource.  You may download the permission form for parents to sign to allow for school access to Bookshare materials and sign it.  If the educator certifies that your child has a reading disability, the teacher or special educator may begin to download books and texts at school and may even have them read out loud by a computer to the student.

The texts may also be converted to mp3 files and listened to on mp3 players or ipods.  Also, students will be eligible for an individual account and will be able to download books and the software to read them at home if they are certified to have a reading disability.

To learn more, contact your special educator or visit Bookshare.org.
