Summit Street School

  • About Our School - We are one of four schools in the Essex Junction Pre-K through 8 School District located in the Champlain Valley of Vermont.  Summit Street School is a Pre K-3 school with approximately 230 students.  Our school consists of: An essential early education program (Tues., Wed., and Thurs. afternoons), two kindergarten classrooms, two kindergarten/first grade classrooms, two looping first/second grade classrooms, one first grade classroom, two second grade classrooms, and three third grade classrooms.

  • Instructional Time - The school day begins at 8:05 a.m. and ends at 3:00.  Fifty five minutes is set aside daily for lunch and a recess. Children receive 90 minutes per week each in Music and Physical Education and 60 minutes per week of Art. The remainder of time is spent in academic instruction: Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Children and teachers access the Learning Center and technology to assist them.

  • Curriculum Standards - All teachers use the Grade Level Expectations and Standards Based curriculum guides, which are aligned with Vermont's Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities. In addition, Summit Street School has a Vermont Act 60 mandated Continuous Plan for Improvement that addresses goals to be accomplished to help children achieve rigorous academic standards. (Copies are available on-line.
  • Special Education, Remedial, Health and Counseling Services - We are fortunate to have a full-time special education teacher, a full-time Speech/Language Pathologist and a Pre-K 50% Speech/Language Pathologist. They are responsible for teaching students qualifying for special education in the areas of reading, writing, math, speech, and language. In addition we have two teachers, one full-time and one 18%-time, that provides instruction to students in reading and math. Summit Street School employs a full time Counselor to help youngsters both individually and in groups with various issues pertaining to self, school, and family. The Counselor is available to serve parents with parenting concerns. A 50% Registered Nurse and a 50% Licensed Practical Nurse help to maintain the day to day health of our students.

  • Support Services - Services in this area include:  six instructional assistants, library assistant, social support coordinator, secretary, 50% social worker contracted from Howard Mental Health, day and night custodians, and three part-time food service employees.

  • Social Skills – We incorporate the Responsive Classroom approach throughout our school that established a community of learners where everyone is valued as a contributing member of the class.  Morning meeting, goal setting, classroom rules, recess cooperative games, school assemblies, academic choice, ext. are all important components of this program.  In addition, the school guidance counselor implements Second Step, a researched based empathy & problem solving program, in classroom throughout the year.

  • Everyday Math – Is the standards based mathematics program that is implemented through the district.  This rigorous language based program was developed by the University of Chicago to provide students with ongoing access to concepts through multiple venues.  A minimum of one hour is required to fully implement the program in grades one through three.

  • Community Involvement - Partnership with the Essex Junction Recreation Department to provide after school childcare.  Partnership with Essex High School who provides high school student BIGS for selected students.
