Student Teachers
In order to be considered for a student teaching assignment within one of our schools, individuals must complete a Student Teacher Application Package. The application requirements and steps to becoming a student teacher are outlined below:
Application Process
All college/university students interested in student teaching within our CCSU schools must submit a completed Student Teacher Application Package including a minimum of three completed recommendation rubrics to the school in which s/he is interested in performing his/her student teaching practicum for placement consideration. A pre-written letter of recommendation cannot substitute for the required recommendation rubrics, but can be submitted in addition to the required rubrics as part of your application package. If the school is interested in placing you, a representative from the school will contact you to schedule an interview.
Review and Selection Process
Teachers who are interested in becoming cooperating teachers will form a review panel to review the applications and meet with applicants whom they are interested in mentoring. The school principal may be part of the teacher review panel at his/her discretion. The purpose of the meeting is to ensure the quality of the student teacher, to ensure the student teacher is a good match for the school and cooperating teacher, and to ensure the school and cooperating teacher are a good match for the student intern.
The teacher review panel will recommend placement of the student intern to the school principal for approval using the Student Teacher Authorization form Part I (copy enclosed). The completed application and recommendation rubrics must be attached to the authorization form.
The principal shall review the materials, and if authorized, complete Part II of the Student Teacher Authorization and forward the authorization form and completed application materials to Human Resources.
Steps Upon Approval for Placement
Before the commencement of the student teaching assignment, selected candidates must complete the background check and other employment requirements, which includes a fingerprint supported background check, registry checks with the Department of Families and Children (DCF) and the Department of Disabilities, Aging, and Independent Living (DDAIL), and other required employment paperwork (e.g. Form W-4, Form I-9). To schedule an appointment to complete these requirements, please contact Human Resources by email, or call 879-5584.
Once all the required paperwork is complete, Human Resources shall complete Part III of the Student Teacher Authorization form and give a copy to the student teacher. The student teacher shall be directed to give the completed authorization form to the cooperating teacher prior to the commencement of his/her assignment. The cooperating teacher is responsible for ensuring that the student intern has completed all the necessary paperwork prior to the commencement of his/her assignment.
Adding a Student Teacher to the Substitute List
Provided the student teacher completes the required substitute paperwork, Human Resources shall also add the student intern’s name to the qualified list of student teachers. Individuals whose names appear on the list will only be eligible to substitute for the cooperating teacher and/or department to which s/he is assigned.
Once the student intern has successfully completed his/her internship, the Cooperating Teacher and Principal shall complete and submit a Pre-Service Teacher Authorization form to Human Resources. Once the Pre-Service Teacher Authorization form is received, Human Resources will add the individual’s name to the general substitute teacher list to enable the student intern to substitute elsewhere within the CCSU.
