Certification and Training Requirements
All coaches must be at least 18 years of age or a high school graduate at the commencement of the sport season for which the person has been appointed to coach. Candidates must also meet the certification and training requirements of the VPA, which requires certification in Sports First Aid and Fundamentals in Coaching within one year of hire. Acceptable certifications include ASEP (American Sport Education Program) certification or NFHS (National Federation of High Schools). For more information about certification, please visit www.asep.com or www.nfhs.org.
Beginning with the winter sports season this year, the VPA also requires coaches to complete the NFHS elective course entitled, “CONCUSSION IN SPORTS – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.” This is an online course that can be found at http://www.nfhslearn.com, and it is free of charge. All coaches must complete this 20 minute course before they can coach at the high school level in Vermont.
In addition to the specific coaching certifications and training mentioned above, all coaches must also complete the CCSU mandatory trainings annually. Please click here to access these trainings.
