Ramadan
Ramadan represents the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The dates for Ramadan vary around the world because they are based on moon cycles. Ramadan begins when the new crescent moon appears, and it lasts for 29 or 30 days. In order to put more focus in to Allah, many Muslims fast during all daylight hours during Ramadan. The fast is broken with the Iftar meal, which takes place after sunset. Regular Muslim practices of daily prayer and refraining from greed, envy, etc. take on added significance during Ramadan.

Atheist Day
Originating with a story posted online in 2003 in which April 1 was deemed to be Atheist Day, this annual holiday (now recognized on March 23) focuses on those who do not believe in god. The term ‘atheism’ first emerged in medieval Europe more than 400 years ago and was used to describe those who rejected the thought of a higher power. Today, Atheist Day is meant to recognize the struggle of atheists to live authentic lives in many parts of the world and the fight to openly affirm one’s atheism. Approximately 2% of the world’s population does not believe in and follow the practices of any religion (Happy Days 365).

Transgender Day of Visibility
Also known as TDOV, this day of visibility is dedicated to recognizing the resilience and accomplishments of the transgender community. Rachel Crandall, a U.S.-based transgender activist, founded this day in 2009 to raise awareness for the incredible burden of discrimination faced by transgender people. Unlike Transgender Day of Remembrance (November), which is in mourning of members of the community who had lost their lives, Crandall hoped that there could be a day to pay homage to living transgender people.
