About Us

 

 

Mission Statement :

The most important goal of the library media center is to empower students with skills that make them effective users of ideas and information throughout their lifetime. The mission of library media services is also to help, in supporting the teaching and learning programs and curriculum needs, by providing wide range of resources and technologies.

Hours: 7:15am - 4:00pm when school is in session.

We are closed during winter and spring recess.

Patrons:

Students: Who are currently enrolled in Essex High School or the

Center for Technology at Essex.

Student teachers, TAP interns and community members are included in this category.

Staff: Include current administrators, faculty and all staff.

Loan Periods:

For Students :

The regular collection books:

These are checked out for a period of 3 weeks (15 school days).

Reference books: They go out overnight at the end of the day.

Videos, vertical file articles and back issues of magazines:

These are checked out for 3 nights.

(Restrictions may apply if teachers have requested some

materials as "In Library use only".)

For Faculty and Staff:

The regular collection books:

Are checked out for a period of 6 weeks (30 school days).

Reference books:

They go out overnight at the end of the day.

Videos, vertical file articles and back issues of magazines:

These are checked out for 10 nights.

( Restrictions may apply if teachers have requested

some materials as "In Library use only". )

Fines:

Overdue items:

Fines for overdue items are 15 cents a day with a maximum of $10.00 per item.

Lost items:

For lost items the patron will be charged the replacement cost of the item plus any late fees.  If the lost item is found and returned to the library within 30 days from the date the replacement cost was paid, the patron will be refunded the replacement cost minus a $5.00 processing fee.

The Library

Mr. Philip Crawford

Director,

Library Media Services

Mr. Crawford took over as head of the library in August 2003 from California, where he served as a librarian for the Helen Boutin Professional, a resource library for San Francisco Unified School District teachers. He is a published author and his column on graphic novels regularly appears in Knowledge Quest, a publication of the American Association of School Librarians, a division of ALA.

Mrs. Mary Brooks

Library Assistant

Mrs. Brooks takes care of the vertical file and assists in the computer lab. She arrived in 2006.

Mrs. Smita R. Narechania

Library Technical Assistant

Ms. Narechania runs the computer lab. In coordination with our Information Technology Department, she helps students and staff with technology issues in the library. She has been a member of our staff since 1992.

Mrs. Jane Newschwander

Library Assistant

You will find Mrs. Newschwander at the circulation desk or putting up engaging displays in the library. She comes from Virginia via Pennsylvania and has worked in libraries for several years.  She arrived in 2007.

Mrs. Renee Turvey

Library Assistant

Mrs. Turvey processes periodicals, newspapers and interlibrary loan requests. She also supervises student aides. A former sub for the library, Mrs. Turvey arrived officially in 2007.

Mrs. Jill Abair

Library Assistant/

Administrative Support

Mrs. Abair handles the accounting for the library, places orders for supplies and manages miscellaneous administrative support aspects of the library. She is also in charge of editing the library web page. She arrived in 2007.

Media Services

Mrs. Carrie Fogg

Educational Technology

    Integration Specialist

Mrs. Fogg assists teachers in integrating technology and the technology standards into their curriculum.  She also oversees the Media Services Office. Mrs. Fogg works with teachers to offer professional development in the area of educational technology and serves on the school, district and regional technology committees. She has a B.S in Chemistry and holds a Teaching License with an Endorsement in Educational Technology.  Mrs. Fogg has worked at EHS since August 2003.

Mr. Ben Lawrence

Audio-Visual

      Media Technician

Mr. Lawrence works in Media Services.  He sets-up A/V media equipment and instructs faculty and students in use of said equipment as needed. He performs regular maintenance of the school's A/V equipment and records and edits video for special events. Mr. Lawrence provides supervision and technical assistance to faculty, students, and clubs.  He holds an Associates degree in Science and joined EHS in September of 2005.
