Media Communications
Course Description:
The Media Communications class at Essex High School will give us an opportunity to explore several media alternatives being used today: printing (books, newspapers, magazines), radio/recording arts, movies/film, television, and computers/Internet. We will examine the rise of each, its current and historical importance in society, and social and economic factors which influence each, and we will have the chance to work with each form of media. “Embedded issues” will be examined such as content variety, advertising, violence, web site (home page) creation, and more. All of these fun activities will be had with an eye toward career possibilities. Guest speakers and possible field trips will enhance the experience through first-hand, expert demonstrations and dialogue.
Media Communications is a prerequsite course for most of the other classes that take place in the Smartlab. If you want to go on to Movie Production, Web design or Computer Animation this is the place to start.
The teaching styles used in this class will vary depending upon the need and will include lecture, discussion, demonstration, watching videos, listening to audio tapes & CDs, research papers, guest speakers, and student presentations. The predominant method, however, will be one of demonstration with ample hands-on time for students to learn through manipulation of the actual equipment.
