French Montreal Trips
The most recent field trip for our French III students took place on Friday May 9, 2008. Although the weather in Essex was a little cloudy, the forecast in Montreal was for sunny skies. How right they were! We arrived at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts around 10:15 am. Off we went on a walk along Sherbrooke Avenue all the way to University Avenue. We were surprised to see a huge street demonstration of Canadian high school and elementary students carrying banners supporting various environmental and social causes. Our 40 Essex students were fascinated by the sheer number of students marching by and the variety of banners they saw. What a great way to practice their knowledge of French as they tried to help each other understand what the signs said.
We continued our city walk and ended going up Crescent Street back to the Museum of Fine Arts which opens at 11 a.m. Inside the Museum, the students explored various exhibits open to the Public. From the Museum, we headed back on the bus to drive three miles north up Saint-Laurent Boulevard with our destination being the popular Jean Talon Market. Along the way, the students commented on the various stores lining the Bouvelard and the fashions of the passerbys. When we arrived at the Market hungry and ready to explore, the students set off in small groups to interact with the French-speaking shopkeepers and buy their lunch. They headed to the boulangerie and the Italian deli on the corner which serves what many consider the best cannolis in Montreal. I saw many a baguette and croissant among their choices.
We ended our day at the old Eaton's department store on Saint-Catherine Street. Now called Simon's, it anchored the students' exploration of the shopping district. They had about an hour to window-shop and see what was in fashion this Spring. We climbed on the bus and headed home. Though the traffic over the Champlain Bridge was not bad, we were stuck behind a Vermont Transit bus at the Highgate border crossing for 45 minutes. We arrived back at the high school a little before seven o'clock. All seemed to have had a good time exploring our French speaking neighbor to the north.
