JROTC Drill Team

The Regulation Drill Team competes at the New England Army Drill League Competitions during the months of October, November, and December. We participate throughout the season at five different competitions, each consisting of seven different events. For the last two seasons we have consistently placed first or second overall at each competition. Last year we earned a total of 24 trophies and the year before we earned 16 trophies. We compete at White Mountains High School, Hermon High School, Old Town High School, Spaulding High School, and the Maine Maritime Academy. The events we participate in are inspection, armed squad, unarmed squad, armed platoon, unarmed platoon, armed individual routine, and unarmed individual drill routine. Squad means that the routine consists of eight cadets plus a commander in a line formation. Platoon is 12 cadets in a four by three box formation with a commander. Armed means that the cadets are drilling with demilitarized M1-Garand Rifles that have had the firing pins removed.
The exhibition team, “X-team” for short, is our show team. We perform at the Albert D. Lawton Intermediate School Basketball Championship round for Boys and Girls Basketball during the half times. Besides the game, we also perform during the Essex High School Memorial Day Assembly on the football field. This team is our show team that really puts our name out there and says that we can do something that looks really cool and look good at the same time. Exhibition drill is the hardest thing in JROTC to master and perform so that it looks easy.
