Junior ROTC Cadets Selected for Aerospace Honors Training

Air Force Junior ROTC Cadets Hannah Paroline and Chris Legge were recently selected for the prestigious United States Air Force Aerospace and Technology Honors Camp. The purpose of the camp is to introduce high-achieving high school Junior ROTC cadets to scientific, technical, and aerospace career opportunities in the United States Air Force. Selection to attend the Aerospace and Technology Honors Camps is very competitive. Those selected have a minimum GPA of 3.5, are rising juniors or seniors, are enrolled in college-prep math and science courses, and demonstrate significant leadership potential. The selection board had a very difficult task, evaluating the the top 5% of all AFJROTC cadets and selecting only 432 to attend Honors Camp. Selectees represent the top ½ of 1 percent of over 100,000 AFJROTC cadets worldwide.

This Secretary of the Air Force initiative will orient selected AFJROTC cadets to aerospace technology educational opportunities and aerospace related careers through a “hands-on” curriculum including visits to college campuses, air and space operational units, research labs, historical sites, aerospace industries, research and technology centers, and museums. Additionally, cadets will hear lectures from general officers, astronauts, and pilots, and participate in simulator and airplane flights. Each camp is hosted on a college campus with an Air Force ROTC detachment. Hannah and Chris will be attending the Aerospace and Technology Honors Camp at the University of Oklahoma.

Junior ROTC Earns "Exceeds Standards" Rating from HQ JROTC

Essex High School was pleased to receive the following correspondence from Col Richard Ragaller, HQ Junior ROTC Director:

We appreciate the opportunity for Col Gary Chilcott to visit your school on 25 Oct 07, representing Headquarters Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.  The purpose of this visit was to evaluate how effectively, efficiently and safely Unit VT-781 accomplished its mission as well as determine your school’s compliance with Public Law, Department of Defense and Air Force Instructions, and the contract between your school district and the Air Force.

Col Chilcott conducted the Unit Evaluation with Col Steve MacArthur, the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor.  Your AFJROTC unit earned an overall unit assessment score of “Exceeds Standards”…the highest rating attainable!  Your superb support and the excellent facilities you have provided the unit greatly contribute to its success.  The instructors are both extremely talented and dedicated.  They create a dynamic and supportive learning environment in and out of the classroom.  Cadets display exemplary pride, and their extensive participation in numerous community service projects is very impressive.  As a result, Unit VT-781 is making a positive impact on Essex High School, the school district and surrounding community!

Junior ROTC Cadets Receive "Top Performer Award" from HQ JROTC Administrator!

Essex Junior ROTC cadets David Combs and Cory Paya were recognized by Col Chili Chilcott as "Top Performers" during the 25 Oct headquarters inspection of the Essex Air Force Junior ROTC Program.  Congratulations to both of these outstanding students!

Just Having Fun!
