Computer Application III
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides the student with an opportunity to apply the skills acquired in Computer Applications to extend their expertise in spreadsheets, data bases, and research on the Internet. It also introduces a new area to them: electronic presentations. The student will learn to create multimedia presentations which will dynamically communicate such things as resumes, class reports, and business reports. Some of the media which the student will be able to use for such presentations include graphics, photographs, text, sound (voice or music), video (disk or tape), and CDs (data or sound). The Internet will be used extensively to obtain files for use in these media and in turn, be included in the presentations. Each student will choose his/her own projects based on needs and interests.
CLASS ACTIVITIES:
Group Discovery -- Students will work in small groups to discover and acquire some of the skills. Demonstration -- Students will be provided with demonstrations of the use of the programs. Projects -- Each student will develop a project which exercises the program being learned. He/she will be free to select a topic which is of interest and/or use to him/her.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
HOMEWORK: The student should expect to spend approximately two hours a week working at a computer outside of class time. Each student works at his/her own pace and must have them completed by a given date. Assignments will be mostly projects using a particular piece of software where, with teacher guidance, the student chooses the topic of personal interest to which to apply the software. Due dates are using long term. The student is responsible for working regularly to be prepared when the due dates arrive.
The student is responsible to meet assignment due dates according to the EHS Classroom Expectations.
CLASS MATERIALS: Each student is expected to provide ten index dividers suitable for the standard sized 8 1/2 x 11 three ring binder. All other materials will be provided (diskettes, three binder, paper, etc.)
ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance in order to maximize computer time experience is vital to this course. The school attendance policy will be strictly adhered to. Only extenuating circumstances will avoid a negative recommendation to the Attendance Review Board in the case of an appeal.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR: The nature of the computer provides many opportunities for a student to choose to behave responsibly in this classroom. It is never acceptable to modify, delete, or even just access other peoples files without their permission. It is also expected that when using e-mail or on the Internet the student will behave according to the contract he/she signed when they received their Internet account. It is believed that high school students are fully aware of what is considered acceptable behavior and a simple rule applies: If the student would not do it if the teacher were watching, he/she should not do it any time.
Consumption of food or drink is not allowed in any part of the classroom.
STUDENT EVALUATION
STUDENT EVALUATION: Students will compile a portfolio of their work as they go. The portfolio should be clear evidence of what they have learned. Periodically, the teacher will evaluate the portfolio and guide the student as to what grade quality it is at the particular point and what can be done to improve it. The portfolio grade will reflect all of the student's work and become the grade for the course.
MISCELLANY
STUDY HINTS FOR COURSE: Even though the due dates seem a ways off, do the assignments right away. This will allow you time to make corrections when your first try isn't perfect.
COMMUNICATION: Students and parents are encourage to talk with Mr. Stinehour whenever there is any concern or problem. There is a phone in the classroom (879-8154), or he may be found in room C-132 a large portion of the day from 7:30 to 2:30. If that is not possible, he is willing to make appointments for other times.
