Computer Applications II

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course provides the student with the capabilities to enter the technological age. First a thorough knowledge of the use of Windows is acquired. The lessons about Windows are followed with a detailed look at Office (WORD word processing, EXCEL spreadsheets, and ACCESS data base), Netscape (use of Internet), and Eudora (e-mail). The emphasis will be on the acquisition of skills needed in the academic and business worlds.

Practical applications of software will include: reports, resumes, statistical analysis using spreadsheets, electronic research, management of information using data bases and telecommunications. These activities will correspond with those that are demanded in the work place and higher education.

Attached is the table of contents for the portfolio the student develops. It should provide a clear outline regarding the course content.

CLASS ACTIVITIES

: Group Discovery -- Students will work in small groups to discover and acquire some of the skills. Demonstration -- Students will be provided with demonstrations of the use of the programs. Assignments -- Following the group work or demonstrations, each student will be required to do assignments that exercise the skills being developed. Performance -- At the end of the unit covering a particular program, each student will be required to take a performance test. The teacher will ask the student to demonstrate that he/she can do the skills included in the objectives for that program. (At the beginning of each unit, each student is provided with a list of the skills and knowledge that he/she is expected to acquire.) Practical Application -- Each student must use each program for some personal, educational, or professional use and provide the teacher with evidence of that use.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

HOMEWORK: The student should expect to spend approximately two hours a week working at a computer outside of class time. There are normally many assignments outstanding at a time. Each student works at his/her own pace and must have them completed by a given date.

The student is responsible to meet assignment due dates according to the EHS Classroom Expectations.

CLASS MATERIALS: All materials will be provided (diskettes, three ring binders, index dividers, paper, etc.)

ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance in order to maximize computer time experience is vital to this course. The school attendance policy will be strictly adhered to. Only extenuating circumstances will avoid a negative recommendation to the Attendance Review Board in the case of an appeal.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR: The nature of the computer provides many opportunities for a student to choose to behave responsibly in this classroom. It is never acceptable to modify, delete, or even just access other peoples files without their permission. It is also expected that when using e-mail or on the Internet the student will behave according to the contract he/she signed when they received their Internet account. It is believed that high school students are fully aware of what is considered acceptable behavior and a simple rule applies: If the student would not do it if the teacher were watching, he/she should not do it any time.

Consumption of food or drink is not allowed in any part of the classroom.

STUDENT EVALUATION

STUDENT EVALUATION: The course operates on the theory that all students can learn, but they learn at different rates. Each student is expected to master everything required in the course. He/she is given whatever time is needed and is not permitted to settle for less than the correct completion of every assignment and performance test. When he/she does, he/she will receive a grade of 100. A count is kept of the number of retries a student has made. After five retries, the student is assigned an additional assignment. The logic of this is that apparently the student needs more practice developing his/her skill in using the program correctly.

MISCELLANY

STUDY HINTS FOR COURSE: Even though the due dates seem a ways off, do the assignments right away. This will allow you time to make corrections when your first try isn't perfect.

COMMUNICATION: Students and parents are encourage to talk with their teacher whenever there is any concern or problem. There is a phone in the classroom (879-8154), or he may be found in room C-127B a large portion of the day from 7:30 to 2:30. If that is not possible, he is willing to make appointments for other times.
