VSSA AWARDS

Essex Athlete Mary Krug (front row, 5th from left) on Sunday was named the Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Vermont Female Athlete of the Year.  Krug, who was selected in February 2008, won her third straight individual state championship in gymnastics as she helped guide Essex to its third straight team title. Krug, a junior, tallied a 36.8 all-around score for the four events, while Essex broke last year's school record set at the state meet with a team mark of 141.7. This
year Krug won the vault (9.4) and parallel bars (9.25), tied for first on the floor exercise (9.3) and tied for second on the balance beam (8.5) Nini Angier, a former VSSA Athlete of the Year and now a coach, maintains that Krug is the best gymnast to ever come out of Vermont. Krug, who has dominated the gymnastics scene for the past three years, warmed up for states with an impressive all-around win (35.5) at South Burlington, including firsts in the bars, beam and vault and a second in the floor. Krug also is a standout performer for the Hornets in multiple track events, including pole vault, where she is ranked first in the state, triple jump, long jump and relay team. She also won the inaugural Vermont Decathlon last month.

2007 Essex graduate Amanda Downey (front row, left) was the Athlete of the Month in May, when she led the Hornets to the Division I softball state championship.  Downey when on to play softball at Allegheny College, where she was the ace pitcher this spring, recording 18 wins.
