EHS Student Activities
| American Computer Science League | Steve Roberts | The American Computer Science League is an international organization that provides four programming / problem solving contests per year and an All-Star contest in late May for the top teams by region. Club members also participate in the USA Computing Olympiad, which runs practice rounds of programming problems leading up to the national competition in March. Top performers nationally go to a camp in Wisconsin to form the US team for the International Computing Olympiad. |
| Astronomy Club | Scott Pennington | The Astronomy Club provides a forum for students interested in astronomy to cultivate their knowledge and passion for the subject. Activities include organizing "Astronomy Night For Kids" for the area's elementary and middle school students several times a year, discussing new discoveries in astronomy, delving into astronomical topics of interest, and observing the night sky. In the Astronomy Club, "the sky is no longer the limit." |
| Chamber Orchestra | Asiat Ali | The Essex Chamber Orchestra is a string ensemble open to violin, viola, cello, and bass players by audition. The ensemble rehearses once a week and prepares string orchestra repertoire from the baroque through romantic periods. |
| Chess Club | Karen Zidovsky | Students meet weekly to play chess and/or cribbage, and may occasionally enter tournaments or competitions. |

The freshman class has planned several activities this year. Class officer elections occur ealry in the year, then we prepare for Homecoming in early October. Other activities have included dances, and a Valentine's Day fund raising activity where we sold flowers and candy.

| Class Advisor- Junior | Justin Norris | The Junior Class involves itself in both social and service activities. Each semester members of the class perform both school and community services. Social activities include dances and fund raising which usually result in a good time as well. The most prominent class activity is the Junior Prom. |
| Class Advisor- Senior | Sarah Schreindorfer | The Senior Class activities this year will be centered around planning for graduation and all its related activities. The traditional activities of planning and making the homecoming float, school and community service projects will also be important class activites for senior to be involved in. |
| Classics Club | TBA | Classics Club meets six evenings a year to hear talks by professors from the area colleges/universities on various culture topics relating to Greek/Roman civilizations. |
| Climbing Club | Dean Corkum | Students meet weekly during the winter to learn and practice climbing skills and techniques at the climbing wall in EHS gym. |
| Computer Club | Seth Moore | The computer club meets each week to play networked computer games. We play team based games that focus on the importance of working together and helping each other out to win the game. Students benefit from the structure of the club, the social interaction, and the emphasis on teamwork. |
| DDR Club (Dance, Dance, Revolution) | Doug Horne | The DDR club revs it up on Wednesdays, after school, in room D104. This is great exercise and lots of fun! |
| Mark Paul | The EHS Envirothon team is a group of 6 students who compete in an environmental science competition at the state level, and, if we win, at the North American level. Our team meets regularly to improve our knowledge in the four content areas: wildlife, aquatics, forestry and soils. In March, we receive a real life, “current issue” environmental problem to solve. The problem is elaborate and open ended. We work on a solution to the problem until the competition in mid to late May. | |

GSA meets weekly to provide an enivironment of tolerance and respect for people of all gender orientations. This group supports individuals and each other. In addition there is outreach to educate and raise awareness on issues of intolerance within and beyond the high school. |

John Ferris | Students can enroll in this scheduled class where they partipate in the production of the school newspaper. |
| Improv Team | Kym Breckenridge | Varsity Improv Team meets weekly to practice and hone comedy improvisation skills and strengthen character work. The team performs regularly at local middle and elementary schools, as well as special workshops with community organizations. Every year the team goes to Boston to perform at Boston's leading professional comedy improvisation theater, ImprovBoston in Cambridge. They will also be performing at First Night this year. |

| Jazz Band | Richard Williams | An ensemble of EHS musicians who learn to play traditional and modern big band/jazz arrangements. Students learn how to improve on chord progressions through rehearsals in the "chop monsters" jazz book. No Jazz or Improvisation experience is necessary to belong to one of the jazz bands, just a desire to learn about jazz. |
Glory Douglass |
Singers must be a member of the concert choir to audition for this group. This is an all-female group of approximately 24 girls. They sing a variety of music in three to four part harmony. They usually rehearse once per week after school for an hour and are often times asked to sing for a community group. They will be opening for Counterpoint at Elly Long Center in October 2004 and will also perform in New York City in May 2005.

| Madrigal Singers | Glory Douglass | Singers must be a member of the concert choir to audition for this group. It is a mix of males and females, approximately 16-18 members. They perform a variety of music from Renaissance madrigals to standard Jazz tunes. They usually rehearse once per week after school for an hour and are often times asked to sing for a community group. They will be performing in New York City in May 2005. |
| Math League | Arthur Pellerin | For all students interested in competitive math, Math League is the activity for you! The math league team competes against other schools in the area at five meets. Qualifying packets are handed out by Mr. Pellerin beforehand to determine which students will attend that particular meet. There are five different categories to compete in - Arithmetic, Geometry, Algebra, Advanced Math, and Team. Talk to Mr. Pellerin if you are interested in recieving qualifying packets. |
| Multi-Cultural Club | TBA | The Multicultural Club is open to any student interested in learning about different cultures, increasing the awareness of multi culturalism within our school community, and celebrating the rich diversity of our world. Club members meet weekly to plan activities. |
| National Honor Society |

The purpose of this organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character. After a nomination process, worthy students are selected for membership. |
| Peer Helpers |

Peer helpers are trained in basic counseling skills and then make themselves available to other students who may want or need a peer to listen. The premise is that students often talk to other students about their stresses and concerns before they will trust an adult. Students apply to be a peer helper in December each year. |
| Pep Band | Trish Cornett | Open to all students. Pep band practices weekly and plays at home varsity football games, and occasional basketball and hockey games. |
| Cathy Bergeron | This club focuses on community service and conducts an annual talent show that raises money for community efforts. | |
| Joe Chase | The Robotics Club works towards regional and national competitions in the robotic field. | |

They usually rehearse once per week after school for an hour and are often times asked to sing for a community group. They will be performing in New York City in May 2005.

| Rugby Club | Amanda Walker and Brad Luck | Vermont's only high school rugby club features boys' and girls' sides that are open to all students.the boys Rugby has a "no contact" fall session. The teams play a competitive spring schedule against teams in New England and Canada. The girls' team is the three time New England Champion! |
| Scholar's Bowl | Lea Ann Smith | This team competes with other high schools in a fast paced question game similar to the TV show "Jeopardy." Practices are typically in the morning before school. |
| Small Ensembles | Trish Cornett | EHS musicians who play small ensemble music for activities at school and in the community. EHS currently has ensembles for flute, clarinet, mixed woodwind, and brass, with percussion and saxophone ensembles in the development stage. All EHS band members are encouraged to join one of the small ensembles. |
| Snowboarding Club | Tom Preska | Student snowboarders of all abilities get together on the slopes and ride, usually one afternoon/evening each week from January through early March. This is a social club that gives those involved a chance to enjoy their sport while on the mountain with friends and classmates. |
| Student Government |

An organization whose aims are to develop leadership skills, foster experiences in government, provide service for school and community, and to provide a collective voice for the students at EHS. Members are either elected or appointed as laid out in the Constitution, and represent all four classes. The democratically elected group represents the will of the student body when making school policy suggestions and creating and organizing various student activities. |

Theater Club offers a wide range of theater opportunities throughout the year, including one-act festival, musical, improv team, and technical theater. Throughout the year we also enjoy many other activities and workshops related to theater including movie nights, audition workshops, and community theater events.

| UVM Writing Contest | Jim Murphy | Sharpen your pencil and join us for the annual UVM Writing Contest. All writer's join on one day in December to write on pre-designated topics. With papers identified only by a student number, all writers compete anonymously. Take the challenge and join one the finest traditions at Essex High School. |

Digital Media Club |
Tom Preska | AV production team makes movie magic! Team Members practice basic production skills from conception to completion for: television/video production, web mastering, cd authoring and audio for multimedia, digital photography, and animation. |
| Table Tennis Club | Scott Mosher | Open to all students. Meets on Thursdays, 2:45 to 4:00, during the winter months. Players of all levels are welcome. This club is held in the Cafe. |

WAM (Writers, Artists and Musicians) |

Students can participate in Writers, Artists and Musicians in two ways. First, students can come to our weekly meetings, where we review submissions for the yearly arts and literary magazine. Students can also submit pieces of orginal writing, artwork, and music to be considered for inclusion in the magazine. Submission information can be obtained at the submission boxes in the English office and the library or from the advisor. |
