The Essex Academies

What is an EHS Academy?  EHS Academies are not stand-alone schools but are programs integrated within EHS. Academy students fulfill the standard graduation course requirements but participate in Academy requirements as well. Currently EHS offers students the opportunities to participate in two academies: the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (AVPA) and the Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Academy.

The Academy of Visual

and Performing Arts

(AVPA)

In 2012/13 AVPA will be entering its third year and continues to mature and evolve over time, offering students the opportunity to participate in an integrated, relevant curriculum tailored to their individual needs. AVPA is for 10th -12th graders and aims to provide a balance between artistic development and academic preparation in the following career strands:

  • Visual & New Media Arts
  • Theatre & Dance
  • Film
  • Vocal & Instrumental Music

Students apply to the academy during their 9th grade year and it is highly recommended that freshman take a foundational course in the arts such as Art 1, Photo 1, Clay 1, Media Communications, Theater 1, Dance, Chorus, Band, Orchestra, or Film.

The Science, Technology,

Engineering & Mathematics

 Academy (STEM)

The STEM Academy of Essex is currently being designed with the intent of offering opportunities to interested students beginning the 2012-13 school year. Participation in STEM Academy offerings are intended to support students interested in building a strong foundation in the STEM content areas through preexisting math and science courses and providing students with the opportunity to explore connections across courses and through additional experiences.
