Japanese Matsuri Festival
Essex High School students of Japanese language and culture performed at the Matsuri Festival at Saint Michael’s College on Sunday, March 27, 2011 before an enthusiastic crowd at the Ross Sports Center. The students danced, sang and performed a skit at the festival which is sponsored every two years by the Japan-America Society. Twenty-five students, and even three former students performed. Yukari Dougherty teaches Japanese at Essex High School and this is her sixth Matsuri Festival performance with students. The theme was “Nihon wo Mamoritai,” or “Embracing Japan.” The students’ costumes did not ship from Japan because of the catastrophic events there, so they pieced together their costumes up to the day before the performance.
Students performed a 2011 popular dance, “Aitakatta,” which means “I wanted to see you!” by AKB 48. Two soloists sang “Toire no Hamisama” and “Ai SanSan” and another group narrated and performed a Japanese folktale called “Momotaro.”
