Computers In Athletic and Rec. Mgmt.

Course Desription:computerathlete

The presentation of Word and Excel software along with the use of E-mail and the Internet will center on the growing career choice of Athletic and Recreation Management & Administration. This course will blend computer skills with the functions that managers of athletic programs need to master to complete goals. Such academic tasks as budget creation, program statistics, public relations, and program development, in which the computer is a mandatory tool, will be highlighted in course curriculum.

Guest speakers such as Athletic Directors, Coaches, Sports Information Directors, Media Sports Reporters, and Directors of athletic facilities will be invited to discuss their roles in today’s technological world.

This course and the Computer Applications II course teach the same computer and software skills. They differ in the theme of the assignments. The student should choose between them based on whether he/she prefers a business/academic or sports flavor to the assignments. Either course will serve as a prerequisite for the Computer Applications III.

Student Responsibilites:

The students are expected to bring a pencil/pen and notebook to class, to come to class on time, to demonstrate a good attitude, and to keep an academic record of their progress in this class.

The student is responsible to meet assignment due dates according to the EHS Classroom Expectations.

Class Materials : Students will be provided with the needed materials.

Attendance : Regular attendance in order to maximize computer time experience is vital to this course. The school attendance policy will be strictly adhered to. Only extenuating circumstances will avoid a negative recommendation to the Attendance Review Board in the case of an appeal.

Classroom Behavior : The nature of the computer provides many opportunities for a student to choose to behave responsibility in this classroom. It is never acceptable to modify, delete, or even just access other peoples files without permission. It is also expected that when using e-mail or on the Internet, the student will behave according to the contract he/she signed when they received their Internet account. It is believed that high school students are fully aware of what is considered acceptable behavior and a simple rules: If the student would not do it if the teacher were watching, he/she should not do it any time.

Consumption of food or drink is not allowed in any part of the classroom.

Student Evaluation:

The students will be evaluated on the four applications we will complete:  Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint.  This will be done through projects completed, tests and a final exam that will count 20% of their grade.  We will spend approximately four weeks on each of the four applications and each application will make up 25% of the semester grade.  The use of the Windows software application will be reviewed from Computer Applications, one test will be given for 10% of the grade.  In Word we will complete six activities; in Access we will complete at least one project.  In Excel we will complete four projects, and in PowerPoint we will prepare one presentation.

* The amount of projects/assignments may vary depending on if review is needed for mastery and/or what EHS project is given to us.

It is a goal to be able to complete one porject for a school need.  Depending on the school year, will depend on which project we will complete.

Communication:

Students and parents are encouraged to talk with their teacher whenever there is any concern or problem. They can be reached by phone at 857-7000 ext. 5537 or by directly emailing the teacher.
