Title I Reading
Designing 21st Century Universal Classrooms
What is the Title I Reading Program?
The Essex Junction School District has a Title I funded reading specialist at each of our four schools. These teachers provide reading support to students in grades K-8 who need supplementary instruction in one or more of the five areas of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This support in reading is provided in addition to regular classroom reading instruction. Our reading specialists work with small groups of students, guided reading groups, and individual students. They go into classrooms to help identified students with reading-related learning experiences and may provide support outside the classroom as well as beyond the regular school day or school year.
How does the Title I Reading Program help students?
The Title I reading program helps children become stronger readers so they can be more successful in school. Goals are set for improvement and to evaluate student progress. Instruction is planned to meet the needs of each student. Title I reading teachers work closely with classroom teachers to provide common reading instructional strategies that can be used to help students receiving Title I support transfer their improved skills to classroom learning.
