Health-related Curriculum

health1CCSU is committed to providing comprehensive Prevention and Wellness learning opportunities for all students using scientifically research-based curricula. The implementation of such curricular programs, aligned with CCSU Health Power Standards, is foundational to the development of health literacy. Along a PreK-12/Tech learning continuum, all 7 CCSU schools play a role in facilitating the development and growth of healthy youth and healthy school environments.

Michigan Model

The Michigan Model for Health is a comprehensive curriculum that aims to give school aged children (ages 5-17) the knowledge and skills needed to practice and maintain healthy behaviors and lifestyles.

Know Your Body

At the K-5 level, trained staff deliver the Know Your Body health curriculum, which provides evidence-based, age-appropriate health education in the areas of safety, building decision-making skills (to support healthy behavior choices), human growth and development, disease prevention, nutrition, physical activity, media awareness, and alcohol, tobacco and other drug use prevention. Second Step

Also delivered at the K-5 level is Second Step, a violence prevention program. Click here for more information about Second Step.

Steps to Respect

Steps to Respect, a bullying prevention program, is given to students in 4th and 5th grades. In 6th- 8th grades, students continue to receive age-appropriate growth and development education. Click here for more information about Steps to Respect.

Project Northland

Students receive more intensive alcohol use prevention education through the Project Northland curriculum. Click here for more information about Project Northland.

Puberty: The Wonder Years

Puberty: The Wonder Years is a puberty education curriculum for upper elementary and early middle school students. It is designed to be part of a comprehensive “Prevention and Wellness” health education program. Click here for more information about Puberty: The Wonder Year.

High School Health and Guidance

At Essex High School, the health and guidance faculty continue to build on the education students received in elementary and middle school, strengthening their wellness and prevention knowledge to promote positive behavior choices and overall health.
