Designing 21st Century Universal Classrooms

What is Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)?

aypUnder the Federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, all schools must show that they are making adequate yearly progress for all students in order to reach the goal of full proficiency for all students in reading and math by 2014. Vermont has set targets (annual measurable objectives) related to a schools assessment results as measured by the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP).  These results, measured against the target, indicate whether a school’s progress in student performance, participation in testing, level of performance, and graduation rate are or are not adequate each year.  Progress is measured in each school based on the over-all school population, but progress is also determined at the subgroup level. Those four subgroups are comprised of students with disabilities, students receiving free or reduced lunch, minority students, and English language learners. Schools must have at least 40 students in each of these subgroups to receive an AYP determination. If a school or schools within a district have less than 40 students in each subgroup, the determination of adequate yearly progress will be made at the district level. For more information about AYP, visit the Vermont Department of Education’s AYP FAQs page.

Did CCSU Schools Meet AYP?

2009-2010  AYP Determinations

AYP determinations are made for each of Chittenden Central Supervisory Union’s 3 school districts and 6 schools:

Although each school within EJSD (Summit, Hiawatha, Fleming, and ADL) met AYP for all students, the Essex Junction School District did not meet AYP in reading or math for the subgroup of students with disabilities and did not meet AYP in reading for the subgroup of students who are economically disadvantaged. Because the school district has not made AYP for two consecutive years, EJSD is considered “identified”  as “Year 2 Corrective Action.” EJSD did meet the academic indicator and participation requirements.  EJSD has developed a plan and action steps for each school in that address the areas that did not meet AYP. Click here to view the Superintendent’s letter to families regarding EJSD AYP Status (pdf).

The Union 46 and Westford School Districts met AYP for 2009-2010.
