How do I get on the substitute list?

In order to serve as a substitute in our school districts, qualified individuals must submit an application package with a minimum of the following:

  • Application for Employment or Schoolspring application
  • Three letters of recommendation, or three Recommendation Rubrics, or any combination of three letters and rubrics. (At least two recommendations must be employment or education related)
  • Copy of license(s) (if applicable)
  • Copy of transcripts (photocopy will suffice)

Applications will be reviewed and screened.  Those candidates who are selected shall be contacted to schedule an appointment to complete the required employment paperwork, including a fingerprint-supported criminal record background check, and a report from the Department of Children and Families.  (Please refer to the attached Employment Requirements for details.)  In addition to the employment requirements listed in the attached, substitutes will be asked to read our Substitute Teacher Handbook and sign an acknowledgement, and complete a variety of trainings. The Substitute Teacher Handbook contains general information about substitute teaching in our district schools, as well as helpful hints, references, suggestions, and general expectations.

Although the costs associated with the criminal record background check are the responsibility of the employee, effective 1/1/2000 individuals who have to complete the criminal record check procedure upon being added to our list of substitutes shall be paid a sign-on bonus equivalent to the cost of the criminal records check process.  Payment of the sign-on bonus shall be included with the substitute's first paycheck after completion of their first day of substitute work.  Work-study students (student teachers, post-bacs, interns, TAAP participants and the like) will not be eligible for the sign-on bonus.

Once you've completed all the required employment paperwork and procedures, your name will be added to our substitute list pending the results of the criminal background check.  The substitute list is usually updated bi-monthly and gets distributed to each of our schools.  Each school is responsible for finding their own substitutes and will contact you directly if/when your services are needed.

All substitutes are employed "at will", which means they can terminate their employment relationship or refuse work at any time for any reason, or no reason at all, without notice.   Likewise, the Superintendent or his/her designee reserves the right to add or remove substitutes from our substitute list or limit the assignment/placement of substitutes at his/her discretion at any time for any reason, or for no reason at all, without notice.

Are there any training requirements?

All substitutes are expected to complete the following trainings upon being added to our substitute list:

What is Sub-Hub Training?

Chittenden Central is pleased to announce an exciting new training opportunity. We have purchased memberships in the Sub-Hub online training program for our approved substitutes. The training is designed for both substitute and beginning teachers, and serves as a valuable resource.  The cost of the program will be free for the first 150 participants from our substitute list.  As a participant, you will have access to five courses. These courses can be completed all at once, or you can complete portions of the course at your convenience over the period of one full year.  You can also move from one course to another freely.  Sub-Hub will “remember” where you left off and will allow you to review previous lessons. The 5 courses are:

  • Substitute Teaching 101 (5 hrs)
  • Advanced Classroom Management (1 hr)
  • Instructional Strategies (1 hr)
  • Exceptional Student Education (1 hr)
  • Working with At-Risk Youth (1 hr)

Upon completion of each course, you will be issued a Certificate of Completion.  Once we receive a copy of your Certificates of Completion, we will update our substitute list to show that you’ve completed the trainings.

Sub-Hub is quickly becoming a national training standard and is an excellent addition to a resume.  Several schools are now requiring Sub-Hub training as a condition of employment.  For more information, visit the Sub-Hub website at http://www.thesub-hub.com  and click on Training Programs/Teachers.

To take advantage of this valuable training opportunity, please email Human Resources so we provide you with the free Login and Access Code information.
