Health-Related Curricula

Chittenden Central Supervisory Union is committed to providing comprehensive Prevention and Wellness learning opportunities for all students using scientifically research-based curricula. The implementation of such curricular programs, aligned with CCSU Health Power Standards and Power Indicators, is foundational to the development of health literacy. Along a PreK-12/Tech learning continuum, all 7 CCSU schools play a role in facilitating the development and growth of healthy youth and healthy school environments.

At the K-5 level, trained staff deliver the Know Your Body health curriculum, which provides evidence-based, age-appropriate health education in the areas of safety, building decision-making skills (to support healthy behavior choices), human growth and development, disease prevention, nutrition, physical activity, media awareness, and alcohol, tobacco and other drug use prevention.  Also delivered at the K-5 level is Second Step, a violence prevention program.  Steps to Respect, a bullying prevention program, is given to students in 4th and 5th grades.  In 6th- 8th grades, students continue to receive age-appropriate growth and development education.  Students also receive more intensive alcohol use prevention education through the Project Northland curriculum.  At Essex High School, the health and guidance faculty continue to build on the education students received in elementary and middle school, strengthening their wellness and prevention knowledge to promote positive behavior choices and overall health.
