The Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (AVPA) offers a challenging and comprehensive academic arts curriculum for motivated 10th –12th grade students who have a strong passion and interest in the arts. The AVPA provides authentic learning opportunities and intensive studies in the arts for students planning advanced post-secondary study or careers in the visual and performing arts.
The Academy emphasizes an individualized and interdisciplinary approach to learning, striving to support student creativity, originality, and artistic development. The Academy integrates technology-based learning into each of the career strands to provide students with the skills and tools necessary to compete and thrive in a 21st century global economy.

Overview of the Academy
AVPA is dedicated to nurturing and developing a student’s capacity for artistic expression through an integrated, relevant curriculum tailored to their individual needs. Recognizing that no educational program can have a “one size fits all” philosophy, Essex High School developed this “school within a school” academy model to provide in-depth academic and artistic opportunities for students.
Balance between artistic development and academic preparation is at the heart of the AVPA. By offering the following five career strands of study students are exposed to a variety of the arts and the careers associated with them:
- Visual & New Media Arts
- Theatre & Film
- Dance
- Vocal & Instrumental Music
- Interdisciplinary Arts
Through a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP), students have the opportunity to create a defined career pathway that will best meet their individual needs and interests. In addition, supplemental learning opportunities such as master classes, workshops, internships, fieldtrips, and possible duel-enrollment in college course are offered.
