2011-2012 Physical Education and Health Curriculum

The focus of the A.D.L. Physical Education Department is for each student to increase his/her physical fitness, concentrating on cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength/endurance, flexibility and coordination. The curriculum includes a wide variety of movement experiences (team and individual sports and adventure activities) to help each student increase his/her fitness level. In addition to gaining an understanding of fitness and sports’ skills, the program targets the development of self confidence and leadership skills for students through developing competency in many and proficiency in a few sports’ skills, setting and achieving personal goals and working in groups of students with different ability levels.

Students are assessed using the CCSU Power Standards: broad Participation, Responsibility and Safety, Motor Skills and Movement, Concepts/Vocabulary/Strategies and Fitness.

The ADL Health Curriculum is taught November through April. During these months students have Health Class every day during every 3rd week. Physical Education Classes will meet regularly during the other 2 weeks. Through the Michigan Model Curriculum and a partnership with the Essex Police Department students gain knowledge and an understanding of how to reduce their health risks through the practice of healthy behaviors and demonstrate the ability to make decisions that lead to better health.

Intramural Activities are an extension of the ADL Physical Education Program and may include any of the following: roller blading, whiffle/baseball, soccer, badracten, badminton, flag football, gymnastics, basketball, circus skills, floor hockey, step aerobics, weight training, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, Frisbee golf. Activities run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from dismissal until 3:30 PM, with safety, learning and fun as the goals of the program. All students are encouraged to participate.
