Physical Education and Health Curriculum

2007 - 2008

The focus of the Department is intertwined with the Vermont and National Standards: for each student to increase his/her physical fitness concentrating on cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and coordination. The curriculum includes a wide range of movement experiences (team and individual sports and adventure activities) to help each student increase his/her fitness level. In addition, the program targets the development of self confidence and leadership skills for students through developing competency in many and proficiency in a few sports skills, setting and achieving goals and working in groups of students with different ability levels.

Intramural Activities are an extension of the ADL Physical Education Program and may include any of the following:

roller blading, soccer, whiffle ball, badracten, badminton, flag football, gymnastics, step aerobics, weight training, volleyball, and ultimate frisbee/frisbee golf.

The ADL HEALTH curriculum is taught from January through March. During these 3 months students have Health Classes twice a week and Physical Education Class 3 times each week. Through a co-taught curriculum with the Essex Police Department called Project Northlands, and through the curriculums of Quest: Skills for living and Project Alert, students gain knowledge and understanding of how to reduce their health risks through the practice of healthy behaviors and demonstrate the ability to make decisions that lead to better health.
